Topic: Labels and labeling

Have you read the labels on the beef packages in the grocery stores, lately?
I recently saw a new label in the meat case of one of America's super duper stores – a label indicating the beef product contained beef and solution. What is in the solution?

What's up with labels?
Labels usually describe an item or what it contains. Sometimes it is a warranty (i.e. Do Not put this plastic bag over your head.  Do Not operate heavy machinery after taking these sleeping pills, or an old favorite - DO NOT REMOVE THIS MATTRESS LABEL.

How can some labels be SO ridiculous and over-state common sense and the obvious, and others be so vague?

Now, we read that the large processors use carbon monoxide to brighten the color and appeal (of meat product to consumers).  Sounds appetizing, doesn't it? Do they need to state that on their labels? I hope so.

The USDA gives tremendous latitude in the labeling of "All Natural Beef".  The USDA requires only that the beef be minimally processed with no added ingredients, to qualify as "All Natural Beef".  A pretty low standard, I agree.  A standard low enough that is difficult to differentiate from common commodity beef (well, I suppose that rules out the carbon monoxide), I hope. But what about the beef BEFORE it is processed? That leaves room for feed antibiotics, use of hormone and growth implants and perhaps other practices.

I suppose the moral of the story is, to examine what the label claims are, or more importantly, what it does not claim. One thing is for certain, not all natural beef is created equal.  We at Colorado's Best Beef are passionate about delivering a great product, and hold ourselves and our product to a high standard. We do what we claim and we claim what we do.
